Can I extend the duration of stay of my visa in China?

You may apply for an extension of the “duration of stay” of your China Visa at a local public security authority before it expires, but without an assumption that the application will be automatically approved. Overstay violates the laws of China and will be punished.

What is the relationship between the validity of a China Visa, number of entries and duration of stay?

Validity of a China Visa refers to the period within which the visa holder is allowed to enter China. The number of entries refers to the number of times the visa holder is permitted to enter China within the visa’s validity.

Duration of stay refers to the longest period the visa holder is allowed to stay in China on each visit, and this is counted from the day following entry into China.

When all the permitted entries are used up, the visa will no longer be valid. Even if there are unused entries, the visa will no longer be valid if the validity has already expired. In either case, the visa holder should apply for a new visa if another visit to China is planned.

The holder of a visa is eligible to enter China at any time prior to the expiry of its validity (allowed to enter China before midnight Beijing Time on the last date of its validity) provided that permitted entries on the visa have not been used up; the holder’s planned duration of stay in China must not exceed the duration stated on the visa.

I am going to Guangdong, then to Hong Kong and back to Guangdong for one night. Does it mean that I must have a double-entry China Visa?

Absolutely. Double-entry China Visa means you can enter into mainland of China twice. Since you are going to Guangdong twice, you must have a double-entry China Visa.

However, it operates independently of diplomatic missions and is neither a branch nor an affiliated organ. Please note that the Visa Center does not participate in the assessment and approval of China Visas.

What are the things foreign citizens should pay attention to while in China?

Foreign citizens must abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China after they enter China, and must not conduct any activities other than covered by the purpose of the visit as stated in application, or activities not approved by the authorities of the Chinese government. If foreign citizens are seeking employment in China, they need to apply for work permits from relevant authorities.

They would face penalties if they breach relevant laws and regulations.

What type of China Visa do I need? Should I apply for a special Visa when leaving and re-entering mainland China?

Single-entry China Visas are usually valid for 3 months from the issue date, and will permit you to stay in China for a maximum of 30 days. This visa will allow you to travel as a tourist or conduct general business activities.

Most people need to apply only for a single-entry China Visa. You need to apply for “double entry” or “multiple entry” China Visa if you need to leave and re-enter mainland China.

Even when you go to Hong Kong or Macau from mainland China you still need to have a “double entry” or “multiple entry” China Visa.

What is the number of entries? What should I do if I have used up all the entries?

China Visa’s number of entries refers to the number of times the visa holder can make entry into China within the validity period of the Visa. A China Visa is normally issued with single entry, double entries or multiple entries. Single entry or double entries visa will expire after the times are used up. If you go to China again you will need a new visa.

If the entries have not been used up but the visa has expired because the visa has reached the end of its validity period, you will need to apply for a new China Visa. Anyone holding an expired visa that goes to China will be refused entry at the border.

It is essential that you check carefully the number of entries and make sure your visa is valid.

What is the difference between a China tourist Visa and business Visa?

China Visas are issued according to the purpose of the trip; either for tourism or business activities. In general, “tourist” visas are issued specifically for the purpose of travel for pleasure, while “business” visas generally permits a traveler to engage in normal business-related activities (sales meetings, visiting a factory, negotiating agreements, etc.)
